Adirondack Council
Advocate for wilderness preservation in the Adirondacks.
Its agenda includes a proposal for establishing a 409,000-acre
Bob Marshall Great Wilderness south of Cranberry Lake.
Adirondack Mountain Club
Represents hikers, paddlers, cross-country skiers and other
outdoor enthusiasts. Many of Bob Marshall’s writings about
the Adirondacks first appeared in club magazines.
Association for the Protection of the Adirondacks
Founded in 1901, the Association is the oldest conservation
organization in the Adirondack Park. It maintains the
Adirondack Research Library in Niskayuna, N.Y.
Residents’ Committee to Protect the Adirondacks
The youngest and often the most outspoken of the Adirondack
Park’s environmental groups. About half of its members reside
within the Park.
Adirondack Nature Conservancy
Working behind the scenes, the Conservancy has helped
preserve tens of thousands of acres in the Adirondacks.
Based in Keene Valley.
Wilderness Society
National organization formed in 1935 by Bob Marshall
and friends. Helped pass the federal Wilderness Act.
Based in Washington, D.C.
